Finding a work at home job is ideal for many people because they can break free of the corporate rat race. They can become their own bosses, set their own hours, and don’t have to be tied to just one company.
An independent contractor is a fancy word for freelancer. You are independent because a company hires you on a per project basis and does not have to pay your medical benefits, vacation time, or taxes. They do not supply you office space or supplies and the company only pays for work that you have completed. Even if a work at home company hires you on a long-term basis, you are still an independent contractor rather than an employee.
There are numerous companies that hire independent contractors who work from home. The most popular work at home jobs involve data entry, typing, multi-level marketing, and customer support at telephone call centers. Because of their popularity, there is a lot of competition from other work at home candidates.
If you choose to work from home as an independent contractor, you need to pay your own taxes on the money you make. You won’t necessarily get tax statements from your company unless you have earned a certain amount of money, so accurate record keeping is imperative. Not reporting your income puts you at risk of having the IRS audit your return and possibly paying severe penalties.
Depending on which work at home job you choose, your company may not have enough work to give you full time hours. If you want to earn a full time income, you may apply for multiple work at home jobs. As an independent contractor, there is no limit to the number of companies for which you work.
Doing work for multiple companies may fill up your bank account but scheduling then becomes more important. Missing deadlines is a black mark on your record and you risk losing more work if you are continually late. Remember that there are hundreds of other candidates who also want to work from home, so if you ruin your reputation with one company, somebody will be in the wings waiting to take your place.
When you are deciding to work from home, take an accurate assessment of your abilities prior to applying for jobs. Certain work at home jobs will require certain skills and not every company will provide training. For instance, if you need to brush up on your typing skills, hold off on applying for any transcription jobs, which require fast typing speeds and accuracy.
Many people earn a full time income by working at home as independent contractors. If you approach this opportunity with a plan in mind and you are willing to be patient and learn new skills, you can achieve success.

Many people work from home full time and earn a nice income to support their families. Even if you have a regular job with a steady paycheck, finding a work at home job to do during your off hours can add some extra income to your bank account.
The beauty of using work at home jobs for extra income is that you still have the steady paycheck coming in to pay your bills and living expenses. Those who work from home full time sometimes need to work for three or four companies because the hours and work can be sporadic, thus making pay periods irregular.
Anyone over the age of 18 who has some computer skills can work from home. The most popular work from home jobs include: data entry, typing, network marketing, call center customer service, or online surveys. Most of these services, depending on the company that hires you, can accommodate late night hours.
College students can earn enough extra money for a semester of textbooks. Moms or dads with families can earn enough to save for a vacation or pay off credit card debt. Retired seniors can earn enough to help pay for expensive medications.
When searching for a work at home job opportunity, do some research into different companies and also honestly assess your skills. Not every company is a scam artist and they are looking for honest, hardworking people to help their business succeed. Being honest about your own abilities and experience will also prevent you from receiving a job that you are not qualified to complete.
The skills you need to successfully work from home, even part time, include good computer skills and quick typing skills. If you apply for a call center position, you will be interviewed and judged on how well you speak and if you can speak, sell, and type notes at the same time. Typing from home or transcription jobs require very fast and accurate typing skills as well as good listening skills.
In the work at home arena, there is no limit to how many companies you work for nor are you obligated to work for a company for a specified amount of time. If you are finishing your jobs quickly from one company, feel free to apply for a different work at home opportunity. Working from home is a tremendous opportunity to make an income but also to save on everyday expenses. You can save money on gas, clothes, lunches out, and childcare. But before you go ahead and think you can get rich working from home, be prepared for a few out of pocket expenses.
Most work at home opportunities involve computer work, so be sure you have an updated and virus-free computer. A trip to the local computer specialist to clean off your hard drive might be in order or you may have to update your software. A good bookkeeping software program is a must now that you need to track your own earnings, taxes, and expenses.
Keeping your computer in good working order and virus free is extremely important if you want to successfully work from home, so the purchase of anti-virus software may be necessary too. Do some research and make an informed decision rather than just purchasing the cheapest software. If the cheap software does not protect your computer, you may be unable to work for many days, or even weeks, for which you will not be paid.
High speed or digital internet access is a must for people working at home. Trying to download files of any kind, written or audio, will be a nightmare with dial-up service. Check your local telephone or cable companies to determine who offers the most reliable service for the least monthly cost.
Typing or transcription work is a very popular work at home opportunity but some companies require the use of a foot pedal and/or a headset. A special software program may also be necessary, depending on the company and their practices. Although the company will offer a referral or links to these items on their websites, these purchases will be out of pocket costs for the new employee.
When you start your search for work at home jobs, you will undoubtedly discover various directories of companies that offer work from home opportunities. Even though this is another expense, these directories will cut down your research time tremendously! After all, someone already scoured the internet looking for these companies to add to their directory. The boring work has been done for you, which makes a directory such a useful tool.
Another way to work from home is to choose a multi-level marketing company (MLM) or a network marketing opportunity. With MLM you will do less computer work but your expenses will come with whatever consultant package your company requires you to buy. Catalogs and business cards are additional expenses. With network marketing, if you are selling a product or service, very often you must also be a customer with a monthly purchasing quota.
No matter what type of work at home opportunity you choose, be aware of possible upfront or monthly expenses before you enter into any agreement. Do the math and also figure out how long it will take or how many new customers you will need to earn that money back so you can start seeing a profit for your hard work.

Now that you have decided to start your own home-based business, you need to select what type of business you want. Do you want to sell products or do you have a service to offer? Keep in mind that once you open your doors for business, you will still need to work hard to provide quality work and advertise your home based business. But the hard work will certainly pay off when clients start hiring you and you can work in the comfort of your own home!
