Working from home may seem like a luxurious opportunity at first glance. For some it truly is great. Be this as it may, working at home can have its disadvantages and therefore, takes an immense amount of discipline to be successful. If you’re considering a career or business you perform from the comfort of your home, this article will prove to be very beneficial.
Disadvantage #1: You are working at home.
When most people think of their home they think of it as their domain, a place of relaxation to bond with their loved ones, not as their place of business. If you choose to pursue a job that allows you the benefit of working in a home office, the outlook on your habitat may change to a negative one.
The best way to move around this difficulty is to designate a specific area for your work, such as a home office or a spare bedroom. This will make it be easier to “leave” work at work.
By doing this, you can still view your home as a place of rest and connecting with your loved ones because only that specific room will pertain to your work. Although you will still be working from your home, you will, in a sense, be able to separate your work from your personal life, even if it means simply closing a door.
Disadvantage #2: Distractions
Distractions come in many forms, some more welcomed than others. If you have children, especially young ones who are not yet old enough to attend school, you’ll definitely have interruptions that can not be avoided. You must care for your children, after all, even if you are working. As much as you have to help your children, you also must finish your work. This can pose a very stressful situation for parents who work at home.
The best way to handle this would be to place your children in a day care program or hire a babysitter during the hours you choose to work. This way, you will be better able to concentrate on your work while you are working and on your children when they are home instead of attempting to mesh the two and excel at both.
Finding a proper balance between parenting and working is never an easy task, but it can be done so that it benefits everyone involved. It may take time and some trial and error, but once you find the proper equilibrium you’ll feel better and be more productive.
Other disturbances often come in the form of an unexpected guests or random phone calls. One way to deal with this is to let family and friends know that you are working and unavailable during certain hours. If they do call or stop by, make the visit as brief as possible or let your voicemail pick up.
Unfortunately, these distractions are sometimes inevitable for you and you will not be able to avoid every one of them all of the time. Do the best you can at setting limits with those you can control and welcome the break for those you can’t.
Disadvantage #3: Time Management
More than likely you set your own working hours, which is great. However, be sure to spend an adequate amount of time working and not just lounging around the house.
To help keep you on schedule, utilize a daily planner. There are many varieties, either online, electronic, or a paper one sitting on your desk. Schedule your work time as well as your fun time so you know you’ll meet all your deadlines and goals. If you feel compelled to do chores during work breaks, schedule those on your calendar. Set a timer when doing chores so you’ll know when to get back to work.
Remember that if you plan fun activities during work time, you’ll have to make up that time at night or on the weekend when your family is home. A flexible schedule is truly a benefit of working from home but it can pose a problem if you don’t schedule your time wisely.
It is absolutely possible to work from home and love it too. With a bit of planning and some major self-discipline, even these common difficulties of working from home can be remedied.
Do you run a direct sales business? If so, and you have been searching for ways to increase your sales through marketing options, the Internet can prove to be a wonderful avenue. The web is fast, efficient and gets your product or service in front of thousands of people who might not have had access to it otherwise.
The Internet has opened many doors for business owners in tons of fields and direct sales businesses are no exception. Marketing your product or service online allows reps to reach a vast amount of people from all areas of the world.
No longer is it necessary to limit your direct sales business to your own town and surrounding communities. It’s quick and easy to set up a website for your business and as your customer base grows so will your profits. That sounds great right?
Unfortunately, not all direct sales corporate headquarters allow their reps to use the power of the Internet for marketing purposes. Therefore, it’s important that you check with the company you are doing business for before deciding to invest your time, energy or money into a marketing plan that involves the World Wide Web.
Every business typically has specific guidelines for what is and is not allowed in terms of marketing their products. Although many companies would be more than happy for you to market their products or service on the Internet, other companies may not be so thrilled.
Some businesses would prefer their products and services not be marketed over the Internet for various reasons. Many companies already have company websites that advertise their products and would like to have just that one website to market their product. Other companies will give their representatives a website that branches off of the main website to make sure that orders are placed and filled correctly.
Yet other direct sales corporations would rather not take the risk of products being misrepresented online. Then there are still more companies who may simply choose to use other methods of marketing.
Even if your company is perfectly fine with you advertising their products or services online, it is still respectful to ask permission beforehand. By asking for consent, you are showing that you value your company and that you want to abide by your company’s rules, both of which are great traits of a good employee.
No matter what the reasoning may be, if your direct sales company does not consent to the marketing of their merchandise via the Internet, it is up to you, as their representative, to respect those rules.
If you choose not to respect their wishes or go ahead and use the Internet to market your company’s products or services without consulting with them first, it could lead to trouble and possibly even termination of your agreement with the company. It is always better to be safe than sorry, so if you are in doubt, just read your company’s policy and if you can’t find the answer within the text, ask.
