Working from home is, for some people, the epitome of the American dream. You set your own hours, and you get to decide which twelve hours of the day are considered working. With the rise of the commercial internet, there have never been more opportunities to work from home and make your business thrive, particularly if you have a marketable skill that doesn’t need a large advertising budget or office infrastructure.
However, there are some things to learn before going into business for your-self from home. Learn from the mistakes of others, you don’t have time to make them all yourself.
First and foremost – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Your mother told you this one when you were ten, and it’s still valid now. Working from home is, well, working. You may be working on things you enjoy doing (like writing, or painting). You may be working in a field where you have a set of clients from a former employer, but it is, still, work.
You need to have the discipline to get up and go to the computer (or go to your home office) every single day, rather than sleep in. You need to be circumspect about making dates with clients and keeping them, or you won’t have clients…and you’ll be handling a lot of the administrative stuff that nobody really likes to do, like cold calling for clients, running the accounts receivables, and handling your own marketing and advertising.
So, anyone offering you a work from home business opportunity that promises you a six-figure income in your bathrobe…proceed with caution. There are careers you can do from home that can generate that sort of income but it still takes a lot of work and determination to reach that level; bestselling novelists, day traders, and affiliate marketers are a few that come to mind. However, you still need a certain level of skill, knowledge, and talent to make any of those ventures a success.
Set goals. This is part and parcel of having the discipline to run your own business from home – you need to set a daily and weekly goal, and then review whether you’ve hit it. One of the most important business skills out there is taking metrics – assessing what you’ve done, what you can improve on, and looking for ways your business can grow.
And lastly, be realistic about how much you can get done during the day. One of the hazards of working from home is that without the structure of meetings and deadlines to show what’s going on, its way too easy to over-commit yourself, to take on more work than you can handle, especially if the work you do tends to all come in at the same time from your clients.
Working from home is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who considers themselves a self-starter. But with enough determination, even the biggest procrastinator can make a home business very successful.

If there is one thing you will see a lot of online it is work at home job opportunities. Advertisements are all over the place and you probably received at least one email this week promoting this very thing. You may have images in your head of clicking ads for pennies a day or some type of pyramid scheme; however there are real work at home careers out there. You simply need to know how to find them.
Telecommuting
Did you know that it is entirely possible that your current position could be done from your home? Many companies are finding that it is cheaper for them in the end if some of their employees do their work from home. They have lower overhead since there is no need to maintain an office space for you, you are a happier employee since you can go to work in your pajamas and productivity actually increases.
If you are not currently employed that is okay too. You will simply need to research and find companies looking for someone with your skill set to work from home. Believe it or not there are many companies looking for telecommuters and recently these types of companies have been highlighted in both major magazine and news programs.
A simple search online for telecommuting opportunities will put you on the right path. You can also ask locally. If you see a job advertised that you could do from home be sure and ask if it is a possibility.
Data Entry
A popular work at home job is data entry. While this may sound like a specialized field, it is simply entering information into a database or a spreadsheet. The latter can be a little more complicated but it truly is not a hard position. Some training may be required if the company has customized computer software but generally all you need is a computer with high speed internet connection.
Typing
Along the lines of data entry are various typing positions you could potentially do from home. A company could require you to create form letters, invitations or simply type reports from notes they have. Transcription service providers also need specialized training but this can be quite lucrative if you have fast and accurate typing skills.
Paid Online Surveys
Paid online surveys are a popular example of how people make money online while having fun. Marketing companies want some consumer feedback before they bring a potential product. Sometimes these surveys are about products or services that are already on the market. This can aid the manufacturers in making marketing, packaging, or product changes and they will pay for your opinion.
Subcontract with Multiple Companies
When putting together a work at home career, realize that you are free to work for more than one company. By combining a couple of part time work at home positions you could potentially make more money than you were when you were out in the work place. Just be sure to ask both employers if this is a satisfactory arrangement. In most cases it will be but every once in awhile you may find competing companies will not be comfortable with you working with the competition.

A part time home business can accomplish two goals that many people have. It can add funds to their bank account and help to fulfill a dream of doing something they love. Working from home has many benefits, including being able to work when you have time, being able to attend family functions and not having to keep up with the rat race.
On top of this, most home businesses can be lucrative. When you are able to find a job you love and pair it with the things you enjoy (like working at home allows), there is no limit to the opportunities you will enjoy.
There are many part-time home business opportunities available for anyone. While moms are often the target, there are plenty of openings for dads, teens, retirees, and even professionals who are simply tired of the daily grind.
Opportunities may not be as limited as you may first believe, either. Take a look at the following positions, all able to be done from home. Determine if you have any of the skills it will take to make them your part-time home business.
At home accountants, bookkeepers and tax professionals – Those in this industry can easily move their office home, doing the tasks from their desk.
Professional marketers, teachers, head hunters and secretarial service providers – Each can perform their tasks at home, in many cases. Finding jobs in this field is easier to do than you may realize.
Computer businesses – Those with skills such as copywriting, business plan writing, web designing, web hosting and researchers can all find jobs that allow them to work at home while enjoying what they already know how to do.
This small sampling is just the start. Many of today’s most common jobs can be completed at home, by merely moving the office to your home.
Part-Time Work vs. Full-Time Work
Perhaps you are not able to work from home for your full time job. Maybe you just do not have time to work from home on a full-time basis. The key may be in doing it part-time.
Home business opportunities can often be done part-time, such as in the morning, late at night or on weekends, whenever it works best with your schedule. Once you find something you love to do, adding the tasks it takes to market your skills is much easier to do.
To be successful working from home, invest the time in finding the type of job you enjoy doing. Perhaps you enjoy making crafts or are a handy woodworker. You may have the ability to communicate well. You may have another skill or talent that really drives you.
Turning those skills into a part time home business may help you to meet more of your goals so you can be more fulfilled. Imagine receiving payment for something that you love to do!
Take some time to consider what it is that you enjoy doing. Then, find the right home based business to help you accomplish your goals. It may seem to be hard to make these two fields come together in the “real,” offline world, but online, you may surprise yourself by just how easy it can happen.

Working from home is many people’s dream job. After all, where else will you get unlimited coffee breaks, the most relaxed dress code possible, and the ability to work whatever hours you want?
This type of work is often billed as being ideal for stay at home moms, but they’re not the only ones who can get a lot of benefits out of a job from home. Just about anyone with the aptitude and interest could enjoy working without leaving the house.
However, there are some downsides to working on your own. You don’t have any co-workers to chat with. You make the hours, which means you need to stay motivated to work them. It can also get pretty lonely. So, how do you make working from home fun, after the initial excitement wears off? Here are a few ideas to keep you from getting lonely, worn down, or just plain unmotivated.
1. Keep busy! That doesn’t mean you have to do the same thing all the time, however. If you’re having trouble on one project, switch to another. If work isn’t going well, stop. After all, many people are paid for their work at home positions by the job, not the hour.
That means keeping productivity up is important if you want to make a decent wage. Try a few online surveys – they’re interesting and they’ll make you a few bucks. Have lunch, read a chapter or two of a book, then get back to your project and see if you feel more motivated.
2. Schedule time to be social. If you have friends who keep regular jobs, try taking your lunch or coffee breaks when they do and visit with them for a while. This might seem at first like an interruption to your day, but it can make working at home a lot less lonely. Remember – almost no one functions well without input from other people.
3. Leave the house occasionally, even if you have to split up errands. Go for a walk, get some exercise, and remember that there are places other than your office. Take your laptop to the local coffee shop for a change of pace or to the local bookstore, if the commotion won’t distract you from your work.
4. Work with others! Have some friends who also work at home bring their laptops or paperwork over if you have a job that can be done socially. If you can avoid getting distracted, this kind of work can make the day go a lot more quickly.
If your job doesn’t allow for in person working with other people, get a good instant messenger account. Don’t let it take over your day, of course, but the ability to chat with other people and to have virtual coworkers can help you beat the loneliness.
5. Be realistic about your abilities. One real pitfall for many people working on their own is the tendency to overestimate what they can do. Never base your regular performance on your best day. The chances you’ll be able to do that everyday are poor, and you’ll just feel overworked and rushed. You won’t always be turning out your best work.
Instead, keep track of how much you can do on a good, bad, and average day, and decide how much to expect of yourself. This will give you a more appropriate work pace and keep you from getting overwhelmed. When you can take things as they come, working at home is a lot more fun!
