You want or need to start a business from home, but how do you choose one that is right for you, for your family needs, and which one will reap the most benefits? Below are some things you need to consider before starting a work at home business.
What’s your passion?
Passion is what drives you to something and makes you reach your goals. How do you know what you’re passionate about? Think about what touches you emotionally; do relationships or humanitarian needs move you to emotion? Maybe pets are your passion; other specific passions might be children, teenagers, fashion, teaching, music, reading, writing, poetry, nature…the list can go on and on.
The idea is to start thinking about what really drives you. Once you know that, then you can begin thinking about which work at home business would be a good fit for you.
What’s a good fit for your lifestyle?
To determine what type of work at home business would be a good fit for you, you need to consider your involvement with other organizations, your personal schedule, your family and their schedules, how much money you need to make, and how soon you need to start making money. In addition, you must consider start up costs, how much money you have to invest, and how soon you can get started. You also need to consider where you’ll be happy and feel fulfilled most at doing.
How your personality comes in to play when choosing a work at home business
There are 4 basic personality types: choleric, sanguine, melancholy, and phlegmatic.
Choleric personality types are strong willed, natural born leaders, not detail oriented, good at delegating and being the boss.
Sanguine’s are fun-loving, life of the party, center of attention and tend to be flighty.
Persons with a dominate melancholy personality are list makers, very organized, detail oriented and analytical. The Phlegmatic personality is laid back, easy going, even tempered and a follower.
If you’re choleric, running your own business is probably best for you. You like being the boss and delegating out work.
For the sanguine, you need to do something fun, something that will keep you interested and allow you to interact socially with others. Social network marketing may be the perfect job for the Sanguine personality type.
Good businesses for the melancholy persons would be home organization, database maintenance, financial or business analysis-anything that involves analyzing or organization.
Phlegmatic’s need to be in a business that will keep them moving. They also need to have a boss or leader that will give them direction and motivation.
Work at home businesses to choose from
As stated in the beginning of this article, there are thousands upon thousands of work at home businesses to choose from. After following the guidelines above, write down each of the areas covered: your schedule, family schedule, your passion, what type of work would be a good fit for you and your personality type.
Once you have those things narrowed down, only then choosing the right work at home business will take less time, and you most likely won’t end up doing something that’s not right for you.
You’ve probably heard the entire rave about Twitter recently, not to mention Facebook and MySpace. But did you know you can utilize these platforms to reach more people which will increase sales for your work at home business?
You may or may not know, but there are literally millions of people on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Combined there are probably billions of people. Those people are your potential customers or at least they may be a link to your potential customers.
The idea behind each of these social networking sites is to connect your friends to your friend’s friends and their friend’s friends to more friends. Get it? And while MySpace and Facebook may be geared more toward building friendships, they can also be used to build your business, whether it’s online or not. Here’s how it works.
You have a website for your business and hopefully a business blog. You write a blog post about a special deal, a new product or a service. That’s good. Search engines like sites that are updated regularly and put them higher in the ranks than static sites.
Now, suppose you announce that new blog post on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social networking sites? Think of all the potential people that will see the link to your blog post and click on it. How many more people will see it and act? The potential is millions.

1. Working from home does not give you the right to be lazy. Therefore, you should still avoid too much distraction so that during time of work so you can focus on the things that you have to do. You should always be on the right track about your “office activities” and reduce “non-office activities” during time of work.
2. Working from home means providing for required needs. For instance, you have to have with you a reliable computer and Internet connection. Since you work through telecommunication, your computer should be your most important possession. Thus, it should be durable and reliable, because one big factor that will determine your efficiency is the kind of computer you are using. And of course, you should get a reliable Internet connection because your computer will be useless without an Internet connection.
3. Working from home gives you the chance to spend more quality time with your family. Since it is rare to be given this opportunity, so you should work on managing your time well to make sure that you are able to maximize your time with your work and your family. However, you have to remember to always make a time frame that you should follow to avoid risking your credibility.
4. Working from home gives you the freedom to choose when, where and how to work. If you have been used to an office-like environment while working, you can always arrange your space to make it look like one. If you are more comfortable with the home-like ambience, then you can set up your office at the living area, or inside your room. It really depends on your preferences. The beauty with working from home and being your own boss is the opportunity to choose how to work how you like it, where you like it and when you like it.
5. Working form home can give you financial freedom. Working from home provides endless possibilities of earning unlimited income. Many are already enjoying financial freedom while working in their own homes and they are genuinely happy with the setup.
Working from home can improve the quality of the life that you have and can give you the freedom to work within a chosen time frame. Although many are still doubtful about this nature of businesses, online jobs and businesses are actually legitimate and worthwhile. So you shouldn’t really be wasting your time thinking. Are you passionate about something? Is there something that drives you, that concerns you, which you’ll fight to the end for? Most people have a passion, but some don’t realize their passions, therefore they’re not living out their passions. Passions are also confused with desires or dreams, but they are not the same thing.
The difference between passions and desires or dreams
Passions are something you’ll fight tooth and nail for; they’re what moves you emotionally and often your passions help you achieve your dreams and desires. Passion moves you to action.
Dreams and desires are what you’d like to see or have. If you’re passionate about your dreams and desires, then most likely you’ll see them come to fruition. A good example would be a musician. A musician had a dream or desire to play music so he probably took lessons somewhere down the road and practiced several hours a day. But, because he has passion to play music, he achieved his goal.
Now, there are people who love music and it’s their desire to play an instrument one day, but it’s not their passion. They’re not driven by a passion to learn how to play and so often the desire sits in the back of their mind, never fulfilled.
Now that we know the difference between passion, dreams and desires, let’s talk about how you can turn your passion into a work at home business.
Hopefully, while you were reading the above you were starting to think about what your passion is.
Pets or animals: Do you have a passion for animals, to see them taken care of properly? You might consider starting a website on proper pet care, or you could offer to take care of the pets in your neighborhood or community by walking them or grooming them.
Babies or young children: Everyone loves babies, but are you passionate about them and long to see them taken care of properly, raised in a loving home, and teach them? You might consider opening a daycare in your home or starting a website with parenting tips.
Single Moms: Are you a single mom or concerned for all the single mom’s in the US today? You could offer to take care of their kids while they go job hunting or start a website full of resources for single moms.
Math, Science or Physics: These are subjects some people struggle with. You could offer tutoring in your home or in the student’s home. You could also start a blog and write about these subjects.
Plants or gardening: Are you passionate about plants or gardening? Teach others in your community how to garden, start a landscaping business, or start a work at home business on the web all about gardening or how to care for plants.
Cars: Antique cars, muscle cars, sports cars are passions for some. You could offer to restore them or build a website around a specific car type.
Antiques: Whether you’re passionate about collecting antiques or restoring them, you can turn that passion into a work at home business online and off.
These are just a few ideas to get you thinking about how you can turn your passion into a work at home business, doing what you love!
