Are you looking to start a work at home business because perhaps you’ve lost your job or need to increase your income, but not sure where or how to look? Below you’re going to find information to help you in your quest for the perfect work at home business.

As you know, the Internet is the information Super Highway and an awesome tool to find just about anything you need to know, including work at home businesses you can start. Of course, not all the information on the Internet is reliable or accurate and there are lots of scams out there, especially when it comes to starting a work at home business.

Where and how to look

The first thing you need know is where to look for reliable work at home businesses. If you plug in the term “work at home business” into Google you will get 486 million results. So obviously that’s not a very resourceful method.

Even if you narrow the search down a bit by using the term “reliable work at home business”, you still get over 24 million results. If you look at the first few results, you’ll see a schlew of different websites all offering “reliable work at home business”.

Therefore, to find truly reliable home businesses, the best way is to ask someone you trust who is working from home successfully. Ask them how they got started, what resources they used and if they can refer you to a website or forum to help you get started.

But what if you don’t know anyone? Perhaps you don’t know anyone personally, but I’d venture to guess there is probably someone you know in your community who works from home successfully. Odds are they have a website or their phone number is in the phone book. Give them a call to see if you can have a few minutes of their time to talk about how they discovered their work at home business and how they got started.

At Home Business: Marketing to your Target Audience

Many work at home businesses involve reaching a certain group of people or people who are the most likely to purchase your product or use your services. This is called your target market or audience. Around that target audience is your niche.

To understand the difference, think of a virtual assistant for real estate agents. Real estate agents are the VA’s target market, and the niche is Real Estate. So the VA advertises to real estate agents within the Real Estate industry.

Now that you understand the difference between target market and niche, you need to know how to market in your niche. Obviously you need to know what your niche is. As in the example above, think about who your target audience is and then think about what the niche would be.

To market to your target audience is, you need to know where they are shopping or looking for your specific products or services. What websites, blogs, businesses or buildings is your target market visiting or entering? Where are they most likely to see what you have to offer and be interested?

If your niche is lawn tractors, you will want to advertise in, greenhouses, tractor and supply stores and landscaping companies. Obviously you don’t want to advertise in businesses that are your direct competition, but narrowing down where your target audience is, will help you market to their specific needs, which will increase your sales.

If your work at home business is online and your niche is accounting computer software, your target market is accountants and bookkeepers. Think about Which websites they’ll most likely be visiting. That’s where you want to market your product.

Your niche might be handmade fashion accessories and your target audience is teens or young adults. Where do they hang out? That’s where you want to market your designs. You might also want to market to their moms, since they’re usually the ones with the money to spend.

On that note, another thing to consider is not marketing too tightly. You don’t want a target audience that’s too specific and therefore small. If you have a product or service that fits only a small group of people, consider ways to expand your target market. Is there an extended group of people you may not have though of that could use your products or services?

In the accounting software example above, you might consider marketing to small business owners or other work at home persons. They may not have a bookkeeper or accountant on staff, therefore your software may be something they could use.

Using affiliate marketers to promote your products or services is also a great way to reach your target audience. Smart affiliate marketers promote products which are relevant to their target audience as well, expanding the horizons for your business. If you don’t have an affiliate program, you’re missing out on thousands of opportunities to promote your business.

No matter what your work at home business is, when you strategically market to your target audience, and look for ways to expand your target audience, you’ll start seeing your sales increasing and your business thriving.

Work At Home Business: Should I Start My Own Or Join One Already In Existence?

You know you want to start a work at home business, but you’re not sure if you should start one of your own or join one already in existence. Here are some things to consider that will help you decide.

If you need to be your own boss, starting your own business is probably the best way to go for you. This way you can be in charge of your time, your income and your tasks. You can outsource when needed and make the decisions that are right for you and your business.

If you have trouble staying on task and meeting deadlines you may want to start your own business too. However, you will need to outsource to those who can help you meet important deadlines and make important business decisions.

If you decide to join a business already in existence, you’ll need to make sure you put forth the effort needed to stay on task and meet deadlines, otherwise you probably won’t get much work from the owner or you may even be asked to leave the team.

Are you really laid back and not easily motivated to do the things you don’t enjoy? If you start your own business, make sure it’s something you’re passionate about or else you won’t stick with it very long. Same goes for joining a business.

For those of you who are really organized and analytical, joining a team or business may be difficult for you especially if the owner is a bit unorganized and not detail oriented. However, you will be a great asset to such a business, so be sure to utilize your natural abilities in a way that will make you a very valuable team member.

If you decide you want to start your own work at home business, delegate some of the decision making tasks to those you trust who will get the job done for you. You will probably get too bogged down analyzing and organizing to make quick important business decisions.

How Your Personality Type Affects Choosing A Home Business

Your personality type plays a big role in working from home; if you’re a leader or need to be lead, if you like to be around people or would rather be secluded, and if you’re laid back and go with the flow or prefer to have things your way.

What’s your personality?

There are 4 basic personality types.

Choleric – The choleric personality is a natural born leader, not detail oriented and good at delegating projects he or she doesn’t like to do or doesn’t have time for. Choleric’s tend to be unsympathetic and controlling.

Sanguine – Sanguine’s love attention and to be the center of attention. They’re very social and often need to be around people in order to feel appreciated, loved and accepted. They also tend to be flighty and will put fun ahead of work.

Melancholy – Melancholy persons are usually musicians and artists, or engineers and analysts. They love to organize, keep charts and lists, and are very detail oriented. Melancholy personality types also tend to get depressed easily and let their need to analyze everything get in the way of progress.

Phlegmatic – These are your laid back friends. They’re calm, even tempered, easy going, go-with-the flow type people. It takes a lot to ruffle a Phlegmatic’s feathers. On the other hand, Phlegmatic’s get side tracked easily and need someone to push them along or they’ll never get anything done.

How Personality Strengths and Weaknesses affect your Home Business

As you can see, each personality type has definite strengths and weaknesses.

If you’re choleric, there’s no question about running your own work at home business. You know you want to do it and you know you’ll be able to handle it. Now all you need to do is find the right people to delegate all the tasks you hate doing.

Having a good mix of the other three personalities under your belt is good for you, but you will probably have a hard time dealing with them-especially the Sanguines and Phlegmatics-they’ll most likely get on your nerves because you’ll have to push them more and don’t have time for that. But, you need them in order to have a balanced business.

Sanguines would be perfect for a social networking business. You’d be best suited working under a Choleric’s direction to keep you on task but you’ll make work fun. That’s not to say you couldn’t or shouldn’t start your own business, but you’ll need a Melancholy and a Choleric to help you.

The Melancholy will be good for tracking sales and analyzing where you can make improvements and the Choleric will delegate tasks to others to keep your business moving and growing.

Melancholy’s, you’ll do a lot of research before choosing which work at home business is right for you and you’ll be hesitant to make the change. But, once you’ve decided which road to go down, you’ll get just the right people for just the right tasks. You’ll need some help from all three of the other personality types, but you’ll make sure they’re right for the job first and will require an intensive interview before choosing.

Phlegmatic’s, you’re probably best suited to work for a business that already exists. You don’t have it in you to start your own business or keep it going. That’s not a bad thing because you won’t have all the headaches and responsibilities of running your own business. You will need some direction to keep you going and to help keep you from getting side tracked. But you are very easy to work and flexible which makes for a great team member.
