Over the last 20 years working from home has become an extremely popular method of earning money. The Internet has become more accessible and has made things easier in some ways.
However, certain myths have also arisen such as:
• working from home is so easy, ANYONE can do it
• there's no need to put in a lot of hours
• anyone can make loads of money without any effort.
But the facts are different.
The Internet has made the world market much easier to access. Working hours are so different nowadays compared to the old "nine-to-five" job. This has led to a massive increase in demand for ways to make money from home as either a secondary income or as a main way to earn a living.
If you want to work from home, you need to decide whether you'll run an offline or an online business. Each one has its own challenges and benefits. Naturally, you can work your own hours, but what you do is determined by the type of job you undertake. You also need to learn everything you can so you have the best chance of becoming successful.
Working from home on the Internet is a very popular way to make money. There are literally thousands of people in many countries doing a similar thing. You need to educate yourself on every aspect of your new business so you can stand out from your competition. Otherwise, you'll only waste money and never succeed.
To achieve your goals, learn skills such as: marketing, writing, basic computer functions, how to use different tools, people skills, bookkeeping, filing and so on. The list is endless because you've got to do everything yourself. If you have the money, outsource certain tasks to people with skills you don't have. But keep an eye on the bottom line.
Your chosen path may be new to you, but many others have already traveled it. You'll have to determine who to believe, what tools, ideas, information and specific type of business is best for YOU.
Do be prepared to spend some money. You can't make it without investing at least a small amount. On the other hand, don't buy everything you see. It won't all be necessary. There are a lot of free ways to learn and get what you need.
Don't ask all your friends and family for their opinions regarding what you're going to do, either. If you do that, you may never start your business. Everyone is an expert on Internet marketing (or so they think!) and you'll hear so many stories that you'll be too scared to do anything.
This same rule applies to a lot of things in life. If you're too scared to try something in case you fail, then you've already failed. Nobody remembers the many failures Einstein or Edison suffered. They only remember the successes.
Someone once wisely said - "I didn't fail. I just found a lot of ways my idea wouldn't work." Get past the ways that don't work, and you'll certainly succeed working from home.
There are hundreds of ways you can make money working at home. If you have even minimal skills and an interest in starting a profitable home based business, you can do so with limited funds and some dedicated effort. Here are 6 potential home based businesses you can start today to begin earning your own full-time income while enjoying the freedom of being your own boss and working in your PJ's if you choose.
1. Blogging
The only thing required to start a profitable blog is a desire to share what you know with others and the ability to input your thoughts via the keyboard. You can blog about virtually any topic imaginable, and if it's entertaining and informative, someone will want to read it.
2. Bookkeeping/Accounting Services
Have a knack for numbers? Put it to work for you by offering bookkeeping and accounting services to other small and home based business owners. Since many business owners hate the accounting part of business, the income potential is limited only by your ability to keep up with the work.
3. Cake Decorating
If you like to bake and decorate cakes, you can start a business selling your services from your home. Be sure to check local regulations about selling food products, but typically, the standards are easy to meet. And this business can grow tremendously fast!
4. Computer Repair
Almost every household owns a computer nowadays, but there are still many people struggling to understand how they work. If you can install software, fix simple problems and add or remove computer hardware, you could build a steady, lucrative income offering computer repair services from home.
5. Pet Care
Busy animal lovers are always looking for someone to care for their furry friends while they travel or when life gets too busy to allow them time to care for their pets properly. Offering dog walking or pet sitting services may be the perfect home business for you if you love animals and like caring for them.
6. Grant Writing
Grant writing is a highly specialized field of writing, though not difficult once learned. If you can follow directions to the letter and can clearly communicate ideas and information in order to win funding, there are innumerable companies and non-profit organizations that will gladly pay for your services.
These are only a few of the many potential home businesses you can start out of your house to earn a good income. Find one that fits your needs and get started today!

There's a lot of paperwork involved in running a home business and this is never truer than when it comes to tax time. Doing taxes is one of the most frightening things for home business owners. A lot of this fear can be swayed if you simply keep your things in order throughout the year and know what you'll need to fill out your tax returns. These simple steps will not only keep your home business in check but it will also keep you from the possibility of getting audited.
The first thing you'll need is an accounting ledger book. These books are found at office supplies store and will keep track of all of your receipts and expenses for you. Be sure to keep track of any business supplies or other expenses and record them in the accounting ledger. The ledger should also have a pocket or flap that will hold receipts of any of these expenses. Make sure that you take a copy of any receipt and leave it in one spot in your office.
Also be sure to keep track of your mileage and get receipts for any fuel you use. This can also be deducted from your yearly tax return. Keeping track of your mileage can be made very easy by keeping a simple spreadsheet in your car. Create columns within the spreadsheet for what your mileage was at the beginning and end of the trip. You can continue adding to this spreadsheet and transfer it over to your accounting ledger whenever you have time.
It's not only your expenses on the road that can be deducted from your tax return. Anything you use at home in order to keep your home business running can also be deducted from your tax return at the end of the year. To determine what percentage of your utilities can be written off for home business tax purposes, you will need to determine what portion of your home is used for home business use. To do this, simply calculate how much of an area you use and how much area your home has in total.
For instance, if you live in a home that has 2,000 square feet and conduct your home business from an office that is 200 square feet, you can deduct 10% of your utilities from your tax return. This is because some of the gas, electricity, and water that you use in your home are used for your home business. Also be sure to include in your home business tax return any Internet or computer expenses that you have had to pay out of pocket in order to keep your home business running.
The other thing that is very important to keep very detailed records of when it comes to your home business is any income that you earn through the business. This is usually much easier because any payments made to the business usually have some sort of paperwork attached to them anyway.
Be sure that you keep copies of any receipts that you have handed out for payments made, and that you keep track of any invoices you have sent out. This can usually be done by simply stapling the receipt to the invoice and filing it with your other accounts receivable.
Attention to detail and keeping track of small items is never more essential to your home business than when it comes to tax time. By simply having a few basic forms and spreadsheets that can be filled out along the way, and making copies of just about everything, you'll be able to do your home business taxes in a snap!
