You can start by getting any investments and permits you might need to start your own home based business. You may have even done some marketing and had some calls from a few new clients. But now that you've started your business, what's next?
Running a home based business is a great choice for many people who want to stay at home and make an income. But once you get past the startup phase and really start running your business, there are a few things you'll need to know to stay afloat and balance home and work smoothly. Here are a few things you can do to make your life easier and your business more successful!
Set Priorities
If you don't make a written list of your priorities, you will be running off mental notes and will soon be forgetting important tasks and jobs. Write down everything you need to do and all the things that you need to get done in one day. Make a weekly or monthly calendar that clearly shows everything you need to do for a particular day.
Starting with the most important, complete each task and check them off as you go. Don't worry about it too much if you don't get everything done on the list for one day. Because they're now prioritized, chances are that you've done what absolutely must be done for that day and anything else can be added to tomorrow's list.
Make Clear Boundaries
One of the best things about running a home based business is that you can mix your work with family. And while that's true, it's also very important to set very clear boundaries about what time is going to be spent on work and what time is going to be spent on family. Both are very important and if you don't make the distinction right away, you'll soon be trying to do both at the same time and failing miserably on all accounts.
When you are working, set aside a small area in your home that is quiet and free of distractions such as the television, radio, or home telephone. Make it very clear to your family that you are working and will be unavailable for a specified period of time. Once that time is over, you then leave your work area and go spend quality time with your family.
It's important to set aside a good amount of time each day for both work and family. This is often hard to separate when running a home based business so it's up to you to determine when and where those boundaries need to be. And then make sure you stick to them!
Be a Boss to Yourself
One of the best things about running a home based business is that you are only boss to yourself. That being said, you must act as though you are a boss to yourself. If you allow yourself to slack off, or take many days off or vacations, your clients and customers will not be happy and you will soon lose them. Demand excellence from yourself just as any other boss would if you worked outside of the home.
Set deadlines; expect yourself to be focused and free from distractions such as Internet browsing while on work time, and have the drive to just be successful every day while you're at work. You might be running a home based business but, this is still your workplace and you should treat it as such.
