Any profitable home based business you choose must also provide services or products that people want and/or need. Selling ice at the North Pole probably wouldn't make for a good money-making business. But selling ice to Iraqis could be a great opportunity. Demand for your products is key.
That doesn't mean that you have to choose a product that is totally new or 100 percent unique to create a profitable home based business. It just means that there are people who will want to buy what you have to sell.
On that note, a profitable home based business must also have room to capture a piece of the marketplace. You'll probably have some competition - and if you don't at the beginning, you will before you're through. But if everyone everywhere is selling the same thing you try to sell, that's over-saturation and a profitable home based business wouldn't be possible.
Once you have your business plan laid out, you know what you'll be selling, you have hours set aside to work your business, then it's time to create a profitable home based business by promoting yourself.

Create a Business Plan
A business plan is essential for making your home based business idea a reality. A good business plan will outline what you want to do and exactly how you are going to do it. Also, a business plan will have clear detailed goals for what you want your home based business to accomplish. Even if you're starting up your home based business on your own, it's a good idea to have a business plan. But if you're considering asking any investors, including banks, for a loan towards your business, they will want to be able to look over your business plan.
Determine the Costs
Make a budget that states what your startup costs will be as well as what it will cost you to just run your business. Whether you will need to start spending money on making a product, or you will need to start paying for things such as computer equipment and an Internet connection, make a clear list of everything you will need to run your business and how much they will cost you.
If you have something such as clothing or jewelry that will need to be made, determine who will be making it and what it will cost you. From this you will be able to determine what you would need to charge per piece in order to make your business profitable. If you will need to charge too high of a price to the customer for one piece, chances are that you won't have any customers to sell to. But if you charge too low of a price, you won't be making a profit and again, soon won't have any customers to sell to.
It's a fine line determining the cost of your product. But it's also one of the most important things you'll do for your home based business.

When it comes to home based businesses, a lot of discussion on online forums will focus on affiliate marketing or MLM (multi level marketing) opportunities. However, these types of opportunities are not for everybody. When looking for ways to earn extra money from the comfort of your home, you may need to do a bit of brainstorming. Let's examine a few ideas that may help inspire your own business venture.
1. Don't Be Oblivious to the Obvious
What can you do? What are you comfortable doing? What do you know about? If you went to college for graphic design, how about running your own graphic design business? Have you spent time at a culinary school? How about starting your own catering business?
If you've spent years training and studying in a particular field, you should be comfortable focusing on it in order to earn extra money. Since potential opportunities might not be staring you in the face, you should make a point of writing down your various skills, and looking at each of them as a potential business opportunity.
2. Turn Hobbies into Cash
What kind of things do you like to do in your spare time? What do you enjoy doing when you're not at work? While very few people can earn extra money by drinking beer and eating potato chips, your hobbies and pastimes may lead you into a new business venture.
If you enjoy painting, you might want to consider selling some of your artwork online. Do you collect baseball cards? How about selling your duplicates on eBay? If you already enjoy doing something, it will be much easier to turn that hobby into a successful business.
3. Take a Closer Look at Your PC
Potential business clients may be looking for services to help their growing businesses. Many of those services can be addressed with the use of software which may already be sitting on your computer. Your PC could very well hold the secret to helping you earn extra cash on the side.
Does your computer have Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat on it? Well then you can earn extra money by converting .doc files into .pdf files. Do you own a copy of Adobe Dreamweaver? You could make money building Websites for small business owners. Are you familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint? You could build professional-looking presentations for busy business owners, if you're familiar with the software that exists on your computer, you could offer a variety of services that could help other businesses.
4. Create Your Own Niche
One of the biggest problems new business owners face is dealing with competition. You might be able to design a beautiful gift basket, but how will you stand out among the tens of thousands of basket makers found online?
Could you produce an all-organic basket? Would you be willing to offer only weight loss friendly products? Can you provide a basket that would be ideal for diabetics? Whatever path you choose to take, it's important to make sure you stand out from the rest of the crowd.
These are just a few ideas to help you think about what you can do to build your own profitable home based business. Sit down with a pen and paper, or your computer, and do some brainstorming of your own. Write down any possibilities that come to mind and you're sure to come up with at least one way to build a successful business at home.
