If you have skills as a writer, why not try and make some money working from home utilizing your talent. Writing is very much an in-demand skill because there are many different types of writing jobs available and thousands of people always looking for gifted writers to whom they can outsource that area of their work.
You need a number of different skills as a writer. Assuming you are working with the English language, you have to be fluent in both written and verbal wording. You need to have accurate spelling and be able to proofread your own work. It's not enough just to use a spell checker as that never picks up all the errors. Likewise with grammar and punctuation, you need to know how to use everything to best formulate whatever piece of writing you are working on.
Even if you're using English, there are differences between American English, Australian English and English spoken in the United Kingdom. Ensure whatever program you're using to write your material is set to default to the correct version or you'll have unintentional errors.
Writing jobs can include: article writing, resume writing, blogging, ghost writing (where you do the work but someone else puts their name to it), eBook writing, review writing, website content, 'how to' type books, research projects and many more. A lot of these jobs are advertised on various freelancing Websites where you bid on how much money you are willing to accept to do their job.
Usually there are several different types of bidders. You find ones that bid ridiculously low prices and undercut everyone else, just so they can get the job. Then you find other bidders that take things more seriously and bid a fair price for the work, even though it may mean they don't get the job. It's up to you to decide what sort of bidder you will choose to become. Bear in mind that your reputation is at stake with every piece of work you write.
You need good time management skills if you're going to work as a writer from home because nobody is looking over your shoulder. You have to determine how long it will take you to produce the various types of work and also keep a balance if you're doing work for a number of clients at the same time. The main thing is never to accept a deadline unless you know you can meet it because that lets the customer down and tarnishes your reputation.
As a writer, if you have confidence in your ability, then offer a fair price and mention the quality factor because, in the end, that's what the customer really needs. If you haven't done this sort of freelance writing before, you may have to bid a little lower until you can build up a reputation.
Having your own website is a very useful tool as a writer. You can build your portfolio by adding the work you do to your site so if a potential customer does want to see a sample, you can refer them to your site. You shouldn't have to provide a free sample of work to a customer to prove yourself.
Working from home as a writer can be a lucrative way to earn a living or bring in a supplementary income. It's up to you to determine if it's the right type of work for you.
