With the current state of the economy and the instability of corporate America today, working from home has become more and more attractive to people of all ages and backgrounds. While it’s a popular dream, how to bring that dream to fruition can be quite the dilemma.
The first, and perhaps the most damaging, myth of working from home is that it’s easier than working in a traditional office setting. In a traditional office setting most employees are given a schedule to which they must adhere.
The work at home realm does allow you more freedom of scheduling; however, it also requires a great deal of discipline. It seems that there are constantly things that need to be done around the house and with that as a distraction it’s harder to get work done. There is no clear cut “leaving work at the office” when you choose to pursue a work at home career.
Another popular notion is that there is no real work at home jobs out there. That is quite untrue. If you have an email address, chances are that you have received your fair share of messages with promises of making thousands of dollars each day just by typing.
While that would be a wonderful thing, you must understand that the work at home community is much more competitive. How many times have you left home dressed in your best and feeling quite optimistic about your job interview until you see a reception area full of applicants that are just as anxious as you are. So you can only imagine what the cyberspace reception area might look like!
Deciding to take the plunge into the world of work at home jobs requires some research if you really want to be successful. The first thing to consider is what type of work do you really want to do. Call center jobs are a lot more plentiful than those that do not require the use of phones.
Think about the hours that you want to work. Do you have small children that you need to work around? Are there times where your environment might be a little too noisy? Background noise is perhaps the biggest enemy of a work at home call center representative. Are you comfortable with selling or up selling? Many call center jobs will involve some aspect of sales.
The equipment and software requirements may differ between different companies but the basics are an up to date computer system, a landline phone line, and a corded phone and headset. Another thing to consider is your working space. Ergonomics are very important because chances are you will be finding yourself sitting for more than the traditional workday schedule calls for.
Working from home can be both lucrative and personally rewarding if you are prepared. Take the time to educate yourself. Join a work at home forum or maybe read a few articles. Then dive in head first and make your work at home dreams come true!
